We Couldn’t See A Thing

One recent night driving home, my husband and I kept hitting patches of fog. Suddenly we hit a patch of fog so dense and so dark, we had zero visibility. My husband hit the brakes and we came to a screeching halt.

My first thought was, “Oh no! We can’t see anything! What if someone else hits this patch of fog and slams into us or we slam into someone as we ease forward?”

Then I prayed!

My husband eased very slowly down the road, not sure of what was ahead or how long we would be in the fog. Soon we were out of it and the darkness that consumed us. It was a very scary event and even my husband, who doesn’t scare very easily, said it was scary.

Life hits patches like this that bring us to a screeching stop. We experience seasons of darkness (some are longer than others). We don’t know what lies ahead or how, or IF things will be okay. We don’t always know how to maneuver through those seasons.

But God says he is with us in the patches of life’s darkness. And while it would be easy to slam on the brakes of life and just stop living, we must keep moving and not let those dark seasons stop us from seeing what God has for us on the other side of the darkness. God is doing a work even when we can’t see it and it’s OUR job to keep moving forward.

Romans 8:17-18 “Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”

These seasons can produce a lot in us:

Romans 5:3-5 “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

It takes huge faith to keep going, not knowing what lies ahead. But knowing we have a God that walks with us through dark seasons brings hope and comfort.

If you are going through a dark season, I hope these verses bring you hope, comfort and strength.

Isaiah 41:10 “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

John 14:16-17 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”

Romans 8:38-39 “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

If you are in a dark season right now, I trust you will lean on God’s promises. I trust you will keep moving while HE works things out. He has a plan, even when we can’t see it. Rest in that dear friend!
